Azure Synapse

Updated: Mar 20, 2020

In this blog post, I will be sharing my view on Azure Synapse, and how it can be utilized with Microsoft Dynamics Common Data Services.

Azure Synapse is great for big organizations utilizing CDS or Dynamics Business Applications. The most interesting feature of Azure Synapse, is that it can provide workload isolation.

Here is a quick explanation of what Azure Synapse is, and how it can be useful to your organization:

  • Azure Synapse is a limitless analytics service, that brings together enterprise data warehousing and Big Data analytics.

  • It gives you the freedom to query data on your terms, using either serverless on-demand or provisioned resources—at scale.

  • Azure Synapse brings these two worlds together with a unified experience to ingest, prepare, manage, and serve data for immediate BI and machine learning needs.

Here is a business scenario, where Azure Synapse would be of great profit:

  • Let's consider that the CEO of an organization wants to run a quick analysis on revenue. He or she is stuck behind three workloads in the queue and will have to wait for their turn. Clearly, a frustrating situation, given that the CEO needs the results immediately.

Innovations in Azure Synapse:

  1. Multiple compute pools over common shared data provides workload isolation and predictable performance for different teams within an enterprise. Transactional consistency of data is guaranteed and no silo’s are created.

  2. Online scaling provides Synapse to adjust compute resources allocated to a workload in real-time without any interruption to running queries.

  3. The new cloud scale distributed query processor dynamically assigns resources to maximize query throughput and automatically rebalances compute as workload characteristics change.

  4. One experience for both data warehouse and data lake, manage, monitored, and secured through a single platform experience

  5. One-click choice of SQL or Spark runtime within the single service enables any analytics of all data in one place.

  6. Cluster and Serverless form factors provides flexible compute allocation to suit the analytics workload.

I hope this helps you to understand the basics of Azure Synapse.

Please let me know if you have any questions/concerns, I am always happy to help the Dynamics Community in any possible way.

Thanks
