PowerApps Release Wave 1 2020

Updated: Mar 20, 2020

This is about the time of the year where Microsoft blesses us with the plan for their enterprise applications.

I will dive straight into what we should be expecting come April 2020 for PowerApps, a family of Power platform.

Here are my thoughts on this first release of 2020 for PowerApps:

Offline capabilities: Poor or No internet connectivity should not hold your business to ransom hence the reason why the offline mode feature is critical to your business especially the front line workers. Microsoft is biased because this great capability is aimed at Model driven apps.

Single Mobile Application for Canvas and Model Apps: Accessing both apps (Canvas and Model-driven) on the similar platform was a no-no. As we have it now, Canvas and Model-driven apps share the same umbrella. A PowerApps mobile app has been developed to house both Canvas and Model-driven apps

Modern Solution Explorer Makeover: Searching and Transitioning between designers just got better. This feature would not only remember your settings but also there will be a recent section with which can switch back and forth in just one click.

Canvas app Monitor: This is a debugging tool which will allow system admins to diagnose and troubleshoot their applications. As you can see you will be able to export error log more efficient, filter results as required, and even share test diagnostic sessions. This feature will allow developers/consultants to easily identify problem areas and fix them in their apps.

Power Apps Test studio: This feature is only for Canvas Applications. This feature will allow system admins to develop key quality gates for application by using efficient test automation. The major part that got me is its integration with build and release pipeline.

Canvas Apps with Azure Application insight: Analysis of data at its peak, As an admin, you need an insight into your app’s usage and much more. This is the way to go.

Generate web app from data: Phone layout is not the only option when get to create app from data. We can now create it in landscape and as you expected it is responsive and can accommodate mobile form factor.

Canvas Components: This by far the best of all the capabilities. Create and share components libraries, support for galleries and forms, using collection and media files etc.

Power BI in Portal: Initially, integration between Power BI and portal is achieved with Liquid tags. Now, we have a PowerBI embedded component in portal designer

Enhanced Unified Interface: You see this feature come to life when users want to create and edit a related record in a form. You don’t have to navigate to those related records anymore.
